About the Presenter
Dr. Fred Barez is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at San Jose State University. He is director of three laboratories in the department, Electronics Packaging and Design, Smart Home and Energy Efficiency, and the Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Technology Laboratory. He developed 18 new courses at San Jose State University including Solar Energy Engineering, Alternative and Renewable Sources of Energy, and most recently, Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Fundamentals. Previously he developed courses related to Disk Drive Engineering, High Vacuum Systems Engineering, Fiber Optics Engineering, Electronics Packaging and Design, and Biomechanics. He was awarded the Pi Tau Sigma, Mechanical Engineering Honor Society, Professor of the year nine times for Outstanding Teaching and Service and the Most Inspirational Faculty by the Department Students. He was the recipient of the College of Engineering Meritorious and Performance Award. He was awarded the ASME’s National Dedicated Service Award, Regional Service Award, as well as the Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award.
Prior to joining San Jose State University, Dr. Barez worked in disk drive and semiconductor industries and was founder and co-founder of two companies. His contributions resulted in significant increase in disk drive data storage capacity and the products he developed affected the performance of over 50% of all disk drives manufactured in the world. Dr. Barez is a co-founder of the Silicon Valley Engineering Council, an umbrella organization of several professional engineering societies and served as its president for two terms. He was the Chair of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Santa Clara Valley Section. Dr. Barez earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California in Berkeley.
