lico tech logoThe potential of many clean technologies is dependent on energy storage.  Batteries enable electric vehicles.  Stationary energy storage can both smooth the intermittency of solar and wind energy and store energy for when it is needed. Electric automobiles are the primary alternative to gasoline burning cars today. Road vehicles consume 27.4 Quadrillion BTUs annually (2005) or about 23% of all US energy consumption, driving our dependence on oil and contributing to global climate change. Advances in Lithium Ion technology have had a major impact in portable electronic devices.  Lithium ion batteries are now being used to provide solutions to some of the challenges in the automotive world. Michael Buckner will look at battery technology past, present and in the future and how it relates to the automotive world.  He will also discuss the opportunities and challenges of stationary storage for renewable energy.

Michael BucknerMichael Buckner is the Director of Business Development for Lico Technologies, a global company manufacturing lithium ion materials, battery cells and packs for mobile devices, electric vehicles and stationary storage. Prior to joining Lico, Michael managed Panasonic’s Energy Solutions Laboratory and held various engineering and management positions at Mitsubishi Materials Corporation in Japan. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electronic Engineering from Brigham Young University and a certificate of Sustainable Energy Conversion and Storage from Stanford University.
